英語で「可能性」は “possibility” や ”chance”、”probability” を使って表すことができます。それぞれ微妙にニュアンスが異なるので確認してみましょう。

possibility

“possibility” は ”possible”（「可能性がある」）の名詞形で、（少しでも）可能性があることに対して使うことができます。

ジョンのセリフも以下のように表現できます。

“I heard that there’s a possibility that the conference will be rescheduled.”
（その会議の日程は変更される可能性があるらしいよ。）

可能性を表現する際に使われる ”maybe” や ”probably” などの副詞は、すでに確信の度合いが決まっていますが（”maybe” は40～60％ほど、”probably” は70～90％ほど）、“possibility” は “high possibility”、“low possibility” のように、”high”、”good”、”low”、”small” などの形容詞を付けることで「高い／低い可能性」などと実現性の強弱を変更して表すことができます。

“There’s a good possibility that I’ll be transferred to New York this year.”
（今年ニューヨークに転勤になる可能性が高い。）

chance

“chance” も ”possibility” と同じ意味で使うことができる表現ですが、よりカジュアルな印象を与えます。

“There’s absolutely no chance of finishing the project by the deadline.”
（このプロジェクトを締め切りまでに終わらせることができる可能性は絶対にない。）

probability

“probable”（「起こりそうな、ありそうな」）という形容詞の名詞形である ”probability” も“possibility” と類似する表現として挙げられます。”probability” は、「確率」という意味でも使われ、数学などでも登場する表現です。

“possibility” は可能性がゼロではない場合に、”There is a possibility～” という表現を使うことができますが、”probability” は “There is a probability～” という表現はしないため、“There is～” の形を取る場合には ”high” や ”low” などの形容詞を付けて、実現性の度合いを示す必要があります。

“It’s not guaranteed but there’s a high probability of encountering dolphins near that beach.”
（保証はないが、ビーチの近くではイルカを見られる可能性が高い。）
