英語で「往復」を表すフレーズはいくつかありますが、その中でも “round-trip” がよく使われます。

“round” は「円形の、1周する」という意味があり、円を描くように元の場所に戻ってくるというニュアンスを持ちます。

ジョンのセリフも以下のように表現できます。

“How much is the round-trip ticket to Tokyo?”
（東京までの往復チケットはいくらですか？）

“We do not offer discounts on round-trip tickets during the Golden Week holidays.”
（当社ではゴールデンウィーク期間の往復券割引は行っておりません。）

“It takes about two hours, round-trip.”
（往復で2時間程かかります。）

同じく “there and back” も「往復」という意味で使われます。
このフレーズは、ある区間から、ある区間までの具体的な往復距離を表現するときに使われ、“round-trip” と比べて限られたシーンで用いられます。

“There and back the distance between home and school is about… 30 kilometers?”
(家から学校までの距離は大体往復30キロくらいかな。)

“The distance is 30 km there and back.”
（往復で30kmの距離です。）

“To complete this exercise, you need to run there and back 5 times.”
（往復5回走ったら、このエクササイズは終了です。）

一方、「片道」を英語で表現するには、“one way” がよく使われます。また “each way” を使うこともあります。

“I bought individual one way flights, but filling out all of the forms was a real pain.”
(片道ずつ航空券を購入したけど、手続きが面倒だったよ。)
