＜Ireneと妹のEricaは近所の公園を掃除するボランティア活動に参加しています。＞

Irene:So did you catch all of that?
Erica:Of course! We just pick up the trash and put it in that big garbage can over there!
Irene:Well, not quite. First, we put the trash into our smaller plastic bags, and then, when they’re full, we put our bags in the bigger garbage can.
Erica:Oh, right. So we just put on our gloves and pick up any trash on the ground.
Irene:Actually, a trash picker might come in handy. Just to be safe.
[hands her a trash picker]

Erica:Thanks, Irene! OK, so I should just put this cardboard box into my bag—
Irene:Oh, as a rule of thumb, we throw away anything bigger than a soda can separately.
Erica:Right. I remember that!
Irene:Are you sure you were listening? You really shouldn’t cut corners on this.
Erica:[laughs] I must have gotten distracted. Can we just work together?
Irene:Sure, maybe we’ll even finish faster that way. Come on, let’s get started!

Irene:全部わかった、今の話？
Erica:もちろんよ！ゴミ拾って、あそこにある大きなゴミ箱に入れればいいんでしょ。
Irene:うーん、ちがう。まず、ゴミをビニール袋に入れて、それがいっぱいになったら、大きなゴミ箱に入れるのよ。
Erica:ああ、そうだったわね。じゃあ、手袋して、落ちているゴミを何でもかんでも拾えばいいのよね。
Irene:そうじゃないわ、ゴミ拾いの道具が使えるのよ。ケガとかするといけないから。
[ゴミ拾い用の道具を手渡す]

Erica:ありがとう、お姉ちゃん！じゃあ、この段ボール箱をゴミ袋に入れればいいのね…
Irene:えっ、大まかに言って空き缶よりも大きなものは分けて捨てるのよ。
Erica:そうだったわね。覚えてるわよ。
Irene:本当に話聞いてたの？手抜きしちゃだめなのよ、これは。
Erica:[笑いながら]きっとボーッとしてたのね、私。ねえ、一緒にやらない？
Irene:いいわよ、そのほうが早く終わらせられるかもね。さあ、始めましょう！

キーフレーズ

“catch all of that” 話を理解する

人の話をきちんと聞いて理解することを意味する表現です。特に人から指示や説明などを受けた際に、その内容を理解できたかどうかについて話す際によく使われる表現です。

例）Helenと兄のWilliamが出かけようとすると背後から母の声が聞こえました。
Helen:I didn’t catch all of that… What was that last part?
William:Oh, she was just saying to drive safely.
Helen:よく聞こえなかったわ…最後に何て言ってた？
William:まあ、運転気をつけてって言ってただけさ。

“come in handy” 役に立つ

ある道具や機器などが非常に便利で役に立つことを言い表すフレーズです。

例）Angelaと夫のPeterがハイキングに出かける準備をしています。
Angela:Alright, I think we’ve got everything packed. Are we missing anything?
Peter:Hmm, bug spray might come in handy.
Angela:さてと、これでいるものは全部荷物に入れたと思うわ。何か忘れてないかしら？
Peter:そうだな、虫除けスプレーがあったら、役に立つかも。

“rule of thumb” 大まかに言って

一般的に受け入れられている決まりごとや習慣などを意味する表現です。通常は厳密な検証などではなく、経験に基づく規則などに対して用いられます。

例）Larryと友人のNancyが炊飯器でご飯を炊こうとしています。
Nancy:So I just pour in a cup of rice and then add a cup of water?
Larry:Hmm, as a rule of thumb you’ll want to add 1.5 cups of water per cup of rice.
Nancy:じゃあ、お米を1カップ入れて、それから水も1カップ入れればいいのかしら？
Larry:うーん、経験から言えば、だいたい米1カップに対して、水を1カップ半入れるといいよ。

“cut corners” 手抜きをする

ある作業などを終えるのに通常よりも安易な方法で行ったり、時間を短縮したり、費用をかけないで行うことを意味する表現です。結果的に作業などの質が低下し、好ましくない事態に至るという意味を含んで使われます。

例）Alvinが母親のCaitlynと地域の公害問題について話しています。
Alvin:I can’t believe the whole river was contaminated. What about all of the animals?
Caitlyn:It’s terrible, but it’s what happens when companies decide to cut corners on safety procedures.
Alvin:川全体が汚染されちゃったなんて信じられない。川にすむ生き物はみんなどうなっちゃうのかしら？
Caitlyn:ひどい話よね。でも、企業が安全手順で手抜きをするとこういうことになっちゃうのよね。
