Josephine:She’s going to want something simple, but elegant. What did you have in mind?
Harold:I know that she has expensive tastes but I was thinking this year I would try something different.
Josephine:Oh, what do you mean?
Harold:Well, I was going through some old photos and found a few of our wedding pictures. I thought maybe I could make a collage and write down some funny memories?
Josephine:I hate to shoot down that idea but isn’t that what you gave her for your second anniversary?
Harold:Oh, you’re right! I guess I did. I’m really hoping to do something DIY this year, though. Any ideas?
Josephine:If you want to go the traditional route, I think the 5th anniversary theme is wood. Maybe plant something in the yard?
Harold:That could work… but I know she has pretty bad seasonal allergies.
Josephine:Good point. Hmm, actually I have it on good authority that she’s been really into mystery movies lately. Does that help?
Harold:Actually, I think it does. What if I made my own mystery treasure hunt with clues to a prize?
Josephine:Throw in some jewelry at the end and it’s perfect! She’ll love it.

キーフレーズ
“have expensive taste (in ~)” （～について）高級品志向である
この表現は衣類、アクセサリー、電化製品、食べ物などに関して、その人が品質の高い高価な品物を好むことを言い表す際に使われます。
例）Joyが買い物袋を取り出し、買ったものをIsaacに見せようとしています。
Isaac:Five hundred dollars! Your spent that much money on shoes?
Joy:As soon as I tried them on I just couldn’t say no. I guess I have expensive taste in shoes.
Isaac:500ドル！靴にそんなにお金使ったのかよ？
Joy:試着したとたん、買わずにはいられなくなっちゃったのよ。靴に関しては高級品志向なのかもね、私。

“shoot (something) down” 却下する
“shoot (something) down”は人の要求や提案などを拒絶したり、強く否定することを意味する表現です。子どもが許可を求めた際に親がそれを認めない場合や恋愛を目的とした誘いや口説きなどに応じないといった文脈で使われる表現です。
例）AaronとBeatriceが春休みの予定について話しています。
Aaron:I told her that we could go camping for a few days but she immediately shot it down.
Beatrice:I’m not surprised! Didn’t you just go camping a few weeks ago?
Aaron:2、3日キャンプに行こうよって彼女に言ったんだけど、即却下されたよ。
Beatrice:だろうね。2、3週間前にも行ったんだろ、キャンプ？

“DIY” 手作りの
この表現は“do it yourself”（自分でやる）の略語で、家具や装飾品、その他の家庭用品や贈り物などを店で既製品を買ってくるのではなく自分の手で作ることを意味します。また、修理や修繕などを業者に頼むのではなく自分で行う場合にも使われる表現です。
例）Zoeは自分で作ったハンガーラックを友人のNasirに見せています。
Zoe:Look, this is the DIY coat rack that I was telling you about! What do you think?
Nasir:Wow, you made that? It looks like a great!
Zoe:ほら、この前話してた手製のハンガーラックよ。どう？
Nasir:すごい、自分で作ったんだ？すごくいいじゃん！

“have it on good authority” 確かな筋から聞いている
ある情報が信頼できる情報源から得られたものなので、事実であると思っていることを意味する表現です。ここで使われている“authority”は「権威」や「確かな情報源」といった意味です。
例）Oliverと友人のRachelは服を買うためにショッピングモールに来ています。
Rachel:I really need a few new blouses, but these are so expensive…
Oliver:If you don’t mind waiting a bit longer, I have it on good authority that there will be a sale next week!
Rachel:新しいブラウスを何着かどうしても買わないといけないんだけど、これすごく高くて…
Oliver:もうちょっと待てるんだったら、来週セールがあるって聞いたんだけど。信頼できる情報だよ！
