Blair:Did you really buy a $2,000 laptop from Cindy?

Blair:I heard it straight from Cindy! We had lunch yesterday, and she was really happy about selling it.
Max:OK, honey, don’t fly off the handle. It’s a great laptop, it’s basically new, and my old one broke just a few days ago…

キーフレーズ
“have an axe to grind” 文句を言いたいことがある
ある事柄や人に対して不満や怒りを抱いていて、そうした怒りや不満を相手に伝えたり、そのことについて議論をしたいと思っていることを意味するフレーズです。
例）Traceyは自分が気に入っている靴を娘のJessieが無断で使ったことに気づきました。
Jessie:Hey, Mom, what’s for dinner?
Tracey:Jessie, I’ve got an axe to grind with you! Did you borrow my shoes without asking!?
Jessie:ねえ、お母さん、夕飯は何？

“fly off the handle” 突然怒りだす
人が急に自制心を失ってひどく怒りだすことを言う際に使われるカジュアルなフレーズです。
例）AaronとCindyが共通の友人Kyleの話をしています。
Aaron:Kyle’s really touchy about the football match he lost, isn’t he? He yelled at me when I asked him about it.
Cindy:Yeah, he flies off the handle every time someone mentions that game.
Aaron:Kyleって、自分たちが負けたサッカーの試合の話になるとすごくカリカリするよな。試合のこと聞いたら、怒鳴られたよ。
Cindy:そうよね。誰かがあの試合のこと話すと必ずキレちゃうのよね。

Amanda:I absolutely love this artist. His work is so different from everything else I’ve seen.
Ray:Yeah, his style is really cutting-edge.
Amanda:この彫刻家、本当に大好き。この人の作品って、今まで見たどんなものともすごく違ってるんだもん。
Ray:ああ、この人の表現方法って最先端をいってるよ。
Amanda:I absolutely love this artist. His work is so different from everything else I’ve seen.

自分でも似たようなことをしているにもかかわらず、そのことを棚に上げて人を批判することを意味するフレーズです。
例）Carlosと妻のGabrielleが隣人のことを話しています。
Carlos:This morning, Joan Carter complained to me about us taking the garbage out late at night. She claimed it’s really noisy and wakes her baby.
Gabrielle:Wow, talk about the pot calling the kettle black. I distinctively remember her taking out her garbage around midnight last night!
Carlos: うちが夜遅くにゴミを出すって、今朝Joan Carterから文句言われちゃったよ。すごくうるさくて、赤ん坊が起きちゃうんだって。
Gabrielle:まあ、まさに自分のことを棚に上げるってやつだわ。あの人だって、昨日の夜中にゴミを出してたのはっきり覚えてるわよ！
