咳が止まらない

Doctor: Hi, Kristian, you were last here one month ago, right? So what’s the reason for today’s visit?
Kristian: It’s been a month now, and I don’t feel any better. It feels like I’ve had this lingering cough forever.
Doctor: I see… Okay, anything else?
Kristian: Um, I’ve been pretty dead on my feet.
Doctor: Have you been getting much rest?
Kristian: Not so much. Things have been busy at work.
Doctor: Hmm… Well, there’s a case of walking pneumonia going around, so you might have caught it.
Kristian: Oh no, is it serious?
Doctor: We’ll run some tests and see if you need antibiotics, but I definitely recommend you take it easy for a few days.

Doctor: 休息は十分に取れてるの？
Kristian: あんまり取れてません。仕事でいろいろ忙しくて。
Doctor: うーん、今流行ってる非定型肺炎があるの。それにかかったのかもしれないわね。
Kristian: そんな…それって大変な病気ですか？
Doctor: いくつか検査して、抗生物質が必要かどうか調べます。でも2、3日休息したほうが絶対いいわよ。

Kristian: そんな…それって大変な病気ですか？
Doctor: いくつか検査して、抗生物質が必要かどうか調べます。でも2、3日休息したほうが絶対いいわよ。
キーフレーズ
“lingering cough” 長引く咳
他の症状がおさまった後も長く続く咳のことを意味する表現です。
例）咳がなかなかおさまらないクラスメートのAveryのことをColeは心配しています。
Cole: Wow, are you okay? Your cough sounds terrible.
Avery: Yeah, it’s just a lingering cough. Otherwise, I feel fine.
Cole: おい、大丈夫かよ。ひどい咳じゃないか。
Avery: 大丈夫。ただ咳が長引いてるだけ。他はなんともないもの。
Cole: Wow, are you okay? Your cough sounds terrible.
Avery: Yeah, it’s just a lingering cough. Otherwise, I feel fine.
Cole: おい、大丈夫かよ。ひどい咳じゃないか。
Avery: 大丈夫。ただ咳が長引いてるだけ。他はなんともないもの。
“dead on (one’s) feet” ひどく疲れている
くたくたに疲れていることを意味する表現です。
例）Elleが同僚のWadeに話しかけています。
Elle: Wade, you look dead on your feet! You should really go home and get some rest.
Wade: I know, I stayed up all last night finishing a project. I’ll go home soon though.
Elle: Wade、すごく疲れてるみたいね。家に帰って少し休んだほうがいいわ。
Wade: わかってる。プロジェクトを終わらせるために、昨日は徹夜だったのよ。でも、もうすぐ帰るから。
Elle: Wade, you look dead on your feet! You should really go home and get some rest.
Wade: I know, I stayed up all last night finishing a project. I’ll go home soon though.
Elle: Wade、すごく疲れてるみたいね。家に帰って少し休んだほうがいいわ。

“walking pneumonia” 非定型肺炎
マイコプラズマなどの非細菌性微生物が原因で引き起こされる肺炎を英語ではこのように呼びます。
例）KevinがガールフレンドのOliviaと電話で話しています。
Kevin: Were you able to get some medicine from the doctor for your cold?
Olivia: Actually, the doctor told me that it’s not a cold, it’s walking pneumonia! He gave me some antibiotics.
Kevin: 医者から風邪の薬はもらえた？
Olivia: 実は、風邪じゃなくって非定型肺炎って先生に言われて、抗生物質渡されたの。
Kevin: Were you able to get some medicine from the doctor for your cold?
Olivia: Actually, the doctor told me that it’s not a cold, it’s walking pneumonia! He gave me some antibiotics.
Kevin: 医者から風邪の薬はもらえた？

“run some tests” 検査をする
病気などの原因を特定するために複数の検査を行うことを意味します。
例）Elizaは医師と検査結果について話しています。
Eliza: So, Doctor, were you able to figure out what’s wrong?
Doctor: Well, we ran some tests but they were inconclusive, so we’ll need to run a few more.
Eliza: 先生、何がいけないのかわかりましたか？
Doctor: いくつか検査したんだけど、まだ結論が出せないので、もう少し検査をする必要があります。
Eliza: So, Doctor, were you able to figure out what’s wrong?
