プレゼントは何がいい？
＜Nicoleは4歳になる甥のJulianの誕生日プレゼントには何がよいか、兄のJamesに尋ねています。＞

James: Hey, sis, you’re coming to Julian’s birthday this Saturday, right?
Nicole: Of course. I wouldn’t miss it for the world.
James: Great. It’s going to be at Party Pizza at 3pm.
Nicole: Wow, is that place still in business? I remember when Mom and Dad used to take us there when we were kids!
James: Yeah, and now I’ve got a kid who begs me to take him to Party Pizza all the time. It’s like we’ve come full circle.
Nicole: By the way, I wanted to ask you what I should get him for a present. What’s he into?
James: He’s pretty obsessed with that cartoon superhero “Super Genki-man”. So if you get him an action figure or something, I’m sure he’ll be happy as a clam.
Nicole: An action figure? No way! I’m going to be the best aunt ever and get him a “Super Genki-blaster” gun. It lights up and has real laser sound effects.
James: Uh… I think I’m going to have to put my foot down and say no loud toys please. Or we’ll never get any sleep at home!
Nicole: Of course. I wouldn’t miss it for the world.
James: Great. It’s going to be at Party Pizza at 3pm.

James: ヒーロー物のアニメ、“Super Genki-man”にかなり夢中になってるよ。だから、アクションフィギュアでも買ってやったら、きっと大喜びすると思うな。
Nicole: アクションフィギュア？だめだめ。私は最高の叔母さんよ。“Super Genki-blaster”銃にするわ。ピカピカ光ったり、本当のレーザー光線みたいな音も出るのよ。
James: うーん、それには断固反対しなきゃいけないかも。音の出るおもちゃはやめてくれって。そうしないと家で寝かせてもらえなくなるから。

キーフレーズ
“not miss (something) for the world” ～（機会などを）絶対に逃さない
行事などに自分が必ず行くことを人に強く断言する際に使われる表現です。
例）Tommyが自分の「独身さよならパーティ」にDeanを誘っています。
Tommy: So we’re having a boys’ night out before my wedding next weekend. Can you make it?
Dean: I wouldn’t miss it for the world!
Tommy: そうだ、来週末の式の前に男だけで集まって夜遊びするんだけど、来れる？
Dean: 絶対行くさ。

“come full circle” 同じことを繰り返す／最初の状態に戻る
関わっている人々は異なるにせよ、結局同じことが繰り返されたり、元の状態に戻ってしまうことを意味する表現です。
例）年老いた母親Graceが病気になったため、息子のRogerが看病をしています。
Grace: It was so long ago, but I still remember taking care of you when you were sick when you were just a little boy.
Roger: And now I’m the one who gets to take care of you. So we’ve come full circle.
Grace: すごく昔の話だけど、お前がまだ小さい頃、病気にると看病したのを今でもよく覚えてるわ。
Roger: で、今は俺が母さんの看病してるってわけか。立場は逆だけど、世の中繰り返しだね。

ある物事や状況に非常に満足していることや非常に喜んでいることを表すフレーズです。
例）Marie は娘のHollyと今度の4連休について話しています。
Marie: You must be pretty happy that you have Friday and Monday off from school.
Holly: Oh, yeah, I’m as happy as a clam.
Marie: 月曜と金曜も学校がお休みでかなりうれしいんじゃない？
Holly: うん、すっごくうれしい。

“put (one’s) foot down” 断固反対する
あることをしようとしている人に対して強く反対する際に用いる表現です。
例）Abbyが美容室に行ってきたSarahと話しています。
Abby: Wow, I love your new haircut. That color looks great on you!
Sarah: Thanks. My stylist wanted to dye it a crazy neon color, but I put my foot down and said I wanted something more traditional.
Abby: まあ、素敵じゃない、その髪型。その色すごく似合うわ。
Sarah: ありがとう。担当の美容師がちょっと普通じゃないようなけばけばしい色にしようとしたから、断固反対してもっと無難な色にしてって言ったのよ。
