Saskia: Venue, check. Flowers, check. Catering, check. Cake, check…
Michael: Sounds like you’re running a tight ship.
Saskia: Thanks, I just want to make sure I haven’t forgotten anything.
Michael: Did you book the band?
Saskia: No, I thought you were doing that.
Michael: I was but then you didn’t like the way I was doing things so you said you’d do everything yourself.
Saskia: I don’t remember ever saying that. I mean, I am doing the heavy lifting here. Why would I say something like that?
Michael: Beats me, but you seem to have a very clear idea of what our wedding should be like and I don’t want to mess it all up. I want it to be everything you dreamed of.
Saskia: You can’t talk your way out of this. The band is just one thing too many for me to be worrying about.
Michael: OK, OK… I’ll sort out the band.
Saskia: We should also figure out the seating arrangements.
Michael: Do we have to? Can’t we just let everyone sit where they want to?
Saskia: No way, this is our wedding, not a barbecue.
Michael: OK, but I have no idea how we’ll be able to seat both my parents and step-parents without someone getting annoyed.
Michael: Sounds like you’re running a tight ship.
Saskia: Thanks, I just want to make sure I haven’t forgotten anything.

Michael: 知らないよ。でも、どんな感じの式にしたいか、君の方がはっきりした考えがあるみたいだし、君が夢見てたような式にしたいから。
Saskia: 適当なこと言って済まそうとしても無理よ。私が心配しなきゃならないことは、バンドの手配だけじゃなくて他にもたくさんあるの。
Michael: わかった、わかった。バンドは僕が何とかするよ。
Saskia: あとは席順も考えなきゃ。
Michael: 必要かな？好きに座ってもらえばいいんじゃない？
Saskia: ありえない。私たちの結婚式よ。バーベキューパーティーじゃないんだから。
Michael: わかったよ。でも、離婚してそれぞれ再婚した僕の二組の両親をどう座らせたら、他の人が気まずい思いをしなくてすむかわからないよ。
Michael: 全部きちんと手配できてるみたいだね。

“run a tight ship” きちんと管理している
きちんと管理されていて、効率的に運営されている様子を言い表すフレーズです。
例）Kylieは慈善団体でボランティアを始めるところで、リーダーのSteveから説明を受けているところです。
Kylie: You seem to run a tight ship around here.
Steve: Well, because we don’t have a lot of people here we really need to make sure everything runs as smoothly as possible.
Kylie: きちんとした運営をされているようですね、こちらでは。
Steve: まあね。人手も足りないから、できるだけ円滑に運営するようにしないといけないからね。
Kylie: You seem to run a tight ship around here.
Steve: Well, because we don’t have a lot of people here we really need to make sure everything runs as smoothly as possible.
Kylie: きちんとした運営をされているようですね、こちらでは。

“do the heavy lifting” 大変な仕事をする
非常に困難で骨の折れる作業や任務を行うことを意味する表現です。
例）JohnとLindaは新しいベッドを組み立てています。
Linda: Why am I doing all the heavy lifting here?
John: Sorry, but I’m much better at reading the instructions. You’re way better with a screwdriver than me.
Linda: なんで私がこんな力仕事しなきゃならないの？
John: ごめんね。でも、説明書読むのは僕の方がずっと得意だし、君の方がドライバーとか使うのずっとうまいから。
Linda: Why am I doing all the heavy lifting here?

“beats me” 知らない
質問に対する答えがわからないことを言うための非常にカジュアルなフレーズです。
例）CocoとAlyssaはテレビのダンス・コンテストを見ています。
Alyssa: She’s a terrible dancer. Why on earth is she in the final?
Coco: Beats me. Maybe the judges like her personality or something.
Alyssa: この娘のダンス、ひどい。いったい何でこの娘が決勝なの？
Coco: 知らないわよ。審査員に人柄を気に入られたとかじゃない。

“talk one’s way out of something” 適当なことを言って～を逃れる
相手を説得したり、相手の気をそらせたりすることによって、あることをしないで済ませようとすることを意味する表現です。
例）Jadeは友人のPaulに、結婚式に行く途中スピード違反で捕まったことを話しています。
Jade: I told the police officer I was running late for the wedding and I gave him a big smile but he still gave me the ticket.
Paul: You should know better than to try to talk your way out of a speeding ticket in this county. The cops here are really strict.
Jade: 結婚式に遅れそうなんですって言って、お巡りさんに最高の笑みを浮かべてあげたんだけど、違反切符を切られたわ。
Paul: この郡ではスピード違反を何とか逃れようなんてしない方がいいよ。警官がすごく厳しいから。
Jade: I told the police officer I was running late for the wedding and I gave him a big smile but he still gave me the ticket.
