絶望的に散らかった部屋の掃除

＜Mirandaは友人Tessaの春の大掃除を手伝っています。＞

Miranda: OK, so let’s get started.
Tessa: Sorry, this is probably going to take a while…
Miranda: Yeah, this place is in a right state, isn’t it?
Tessa: I know. Thanks so much for helping me, I really appreciate it.
Miranda: Sure, any time! So, where do we start?
Tessa: I don’t know. It’s so messy! This place is a lost cause.
Miranda: It’ll be fine. We just have to get started is all!
Tessa: Seriously, look at this mess. Maybe I’ll just leave it the way it is. It’ll be fine…
Miranda: No way, I’m not letting you take the easy way out! We’ll have this clean by the end of the night.
Tessa: You really think so?
Miranda: Definitely! I promise you there’s light at the end of the tunnel.
Tessa: Thanks, Miranda! OK, let’s do this.

Miranda: さて、それじゃ始めましょう。
Tessa: ごめんね、結構時間かかるかもしれないわ…
Miranda: そうね、ここはひどい散らかり方じゃない？
Tessa: わかってるわ。手伝ってくれて本当にありがとう。すごく感謝してる。
Miranda: もちろんよ、いつでも言って！じゃあ、どこから始める？
Tessa: わからないわ。すごく散らかってるんだもの！絶望的よ、この部屋。
Miranda: 大丈夫。とにかく始めなきゃいけないってことよ！
Tessa: 冗談抜きで、見てよこの散らかり方。このままほっとこうかしら。それでも構わないし…
Miranda: ありえない。楽な道は選ばせないわよ！今夜中にここをきれいにするの。
Tessa: 本気で言ってるの？
Miranda: 当然よ！どんな大変なことでもいずれは終わりが見えてくるものよ、保証するわ。
Tessa: ありがとう、Miranda！それじゃ、始めましょう。

キーフレーズ

“(be) in a right state”　とても散らかっている

ある場所などが非常に散らかっていることや混乱していることを意味するイギリス英語の表現です。この表現は人が非常に混乱していたり、うろたえた状態であることを言う際にも使われます。

例）IzzyとOliverがShellyのことを話しています。
Izzy: I heard Shelly lost her passport! She must have been so upset.
Oliver: Yeah, she was in a right state.
Izzy: Shellyがパスポートなくしたんだって！？そうとう慌てたろ。
Oliver: うん、パニクってたわ。

“a lost cause”　見込みのない人／もの

この表現はうまくいく見込みのない人やものを言い表す際に使われます。

例）SilasとPhilが自分たちのサッカーチームに最近加わったメンバーの話をしています。
Silas: I can’t believe how bad he is!
Phil: I told you, he’s a lost cause. He’s got absolutely no coordination.
Silas: あんなにヘタクソなんて信じられないよ！
Phil: 言っただろ、見込みなしだって。運動神経ゼロだよ。

“take the easy way out”　安易な道を選ぶ

問題などに対処しなければならない場面で、それが最善の対応ではないのに、安易な解決策を選択してしまうことを意味するフレーズです。

例）人から借りた本を1年以上も返し忘れていたCharlieがHazelと話しています。
Charlie: Anyway, I knew he’d be angry, so I just left the book in his mailbox.
Hazel: Wow. You always take the easy way out!
Charlie: どの道あいつが怒ってることはわかってたから、本は黙ってポストに入れてきちゃったよ。
Hazel: うわっ。お前って、いつも安易な解決方法を選ぶな！

“light at the end of the tunnel”　前途の光明

困難な状況などがあと少しで終わりそうな状況で使われるフレーズです。

例）MollyとEstherが大きなパーティーの準備をしています。
Molly: We’re almost done sending out all the invitations! Only 10 more to go.
Esther: Finally! There’s a light at the end of the tunnel.
Molly: 招待状の発送、もう少しで終わるわよ！あと10通！
Esther: やっとね！トンネルの出口が見えてきたわよ。
