Ken: Hey Freddy, guess what!
Freddy: What?
Ken: I got a hold of tickets for the best New Year’s Party in town!
Freddy: No way, tickets for La Vista’s Countdown party?
Ken: Yes! My cousin works for an event management company and got the tickets for me.
Freddy: That’s awesome, only the cream of the crop get invited to that party!
Ken: I know, it’s going to be great. Make sure to wear your best suit, though.
Freddy: What’s that supposed to mean? I always dress well.
Ken: I know, I’m just saying. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime kind of event.
Freddy: Don’t worry, I’ll give it all I’ve got for a night at La Vista!
Ken: I hope so! I got us the VIP tickets!
Freddy: You’re kidding! You’ve really topped yourself this time…
Freddy: What?

Freddy: そりゃすごい。ごく一部の人しか招待されないんだぜ、そのパーティー！
Ken: 知ってるよ。すごく楽しいぞ。一番いいスーツ着て来いよ、必ず。
Freddy: どういう意味だよ、それ？俺はいつだってまともな服着てるぞ。
Ken: わかってるって、ただ言っただけさ。一生に一度の大イベントだからな。
Freddy: 心配するなって。La Vistaの夜は全力でおしゃれしていくから。
Ken: そうしてくれ。VIPチケットだからな、手に入ったのは。
Freddy: うそだろ？！今回は本当によくやってくれたな…

キーフレーズ
“get a hold of (something)” ～を手に入れる
通常であれば手に入れることが難しいようなものを首尾よく手に入れることを意味する表現です。なお、この表現の”of”の後に「人」が来ると、「～と連絡をとる」の意味になります。
例）友人同士のJudyとTamaraが話しています。
Judy: Where did you get a hold of these shoes? They were sold out everywhere!
Tamara: I was really lucky. I found them in my size at an outlet store!
Judy: その靴どこで手に入れたの？どこ行っても売り切れだったのに。
Tamara: 運がよかったのよ。アウトレットのお店でサイズが合うのを見つけたの！
Judy: Where did you get a hold of these shoes? They were sold out everywhere!

“cream of the crop” 最良のもの
同種のものや人の中で最も優れていることを言い表すために使われるフレーズです。
例）Craigが友人Russellと最近買ったテレビについて話しています。
Craig: It’s got all the latest features and it can play 3D movies!
Russell: Wow, you bought the cream of the crop, didn’t you?
Craig: 最新の機能が全部ついてて、3Dの映画も見れるんだぜ。
Russell: すごいな、極上のテレビを買ったってことだな。

Russell: Wow, you bought the cream of the crop, didn’t you?

“give it all (one) has got” 全力を尽くす
ある事柄を行う際に最大限の努力をすることを言う際に使われる表現です。
例）Valerieがこれから歌手のオーディションを受けるSheilaを励ましています。
Sheila: I’m so nervous! I’ve never performed in front of a panel of judges before.
Valerie: Don’t quit before you’ve even started! Go out there and give it all you’ve got!
Sheila: 私、すごく緊張してるわ。審査員の人たちを前にして歌うの初めてだし。
Valerie: まだ始めてもないのにあきらめちゃだめよ！あそこに行って、全力を尽くしてくるのよ！

“top (oneself)” 今までにない成果を収める
予想に反して、それまでにない素晴らしい成果をあげることを意味するアメリカ英語の表現です。
例）Alanは妻Jillが描いた絵を褒めています。
Jill: Do you think it looks OK?
Alan: It looks amazing! You’ve really topped yourself this time!
Jill: 上手く描けてると思う？
Alan: すごいよ！今までにないぐらい上手くかけてるよ！
