＜JamalとWarrenはハーフマラソンを走るために練習しています。＞

Warren: It’s so hot today.
Jamal: I don’t think I can keep going for much longer. We’ve only run 4 km and I’m already exhausted.
Warren: Don’t throw in the towel. We’ve been working really hard for months.
Jamal: I feel like I haven’t improved at all, though.
Warren: You have! Your running time has been gradually getting better.
Jamal: I don’t know. Maybe I’m just not cut out for running a marathon.
Warren: Come on, every runner has to go through tough training.
Jamal: I guess you’re right…
Warren: You just have to keep your eyes on the prize. Imagine how good you’ll feel when you reach the finish line!
Jamal: I guess I just have to push through it.
Warren: Exactly. And after our strict training regime, the marathon will be a cakewalk!
Jamal: That would be great.

Warren: これを乗り越えたら何が待ってるか考えるんだ。完走できたらどんな気分か想像するんだ！
Jamal: やり遂げなきゃいけないみたいだな。
Warren: その通り。俺たちの厳しいトレーニング方法と比べりゃ、マラソンなんてすごく簡単なことだって思えるさ。

キーフレーズ
“throw in the towel” 途中であきらめる
自分の敗北を認めたり、それ以上努力することをやめてしまうことを意味する表現です。
例）ルームメートのGideonとDavidが料理教室について話しています。
Gideon: I took a cooking class once, but I threw in the towel after a week.
David: You should give it another try! Practice makes perfect!
Gideon: 前に料理教室に通ってたんだけど、1週間で挫折した。
David: もう一度やってみろよ！習うより慣れろって言うだろ！

“not cut out for (something)” ～に向いていない
素質や能力などがないために、特定の技能や職業などに向いていないことを意味する表現です。
例）NaomiとAutumnがキャンプの話をしています。
Naomi: Our family is going camping this summer. I wish we could just stay at a nice hotel.
Autumn: I know exactly how you feel. I’m just not cut out for the outdoors.
Naomi: 今年の夏は家族でキャンプに行くらしいの。私は、そんなところより素敵なホテルとかに泊まれたらいいのになあって思うのに。
Autumn: あなたの気持ち、よくわかるわ。私もアウトドアに向いてないから。

最終的な目標について考えながら、それに向かって努力し続けることを意味する表現です。
例）Orlandoが同級生のShaunと卒業論文の話をしています。
Orlando: I’m so sick of writing my thesis.
Shaun: Keep your eyes on the prize, man. One more week, and we’ll both be free!
Orlando: もう卒論書くのにうんざりしてきた。
Shaun: おい、ゴールを見失っちゃだめだ。もう1週間、それで俺たちは自由の身なんだから！

“cakewalk” とても容易なこと
ある事柄が非常に容易に実行できることを言い表す際に使われるフレーズです。
例）クラスメートのPorterとJulieが数学の試験について話しています。
Porter: I’m so nervous. I’ll probably fail.
Julie: Don’t worry! We studied so much, it’ll be a cakewalk.
Porter: 心配だなぁ。たぶん合格できないかも。
Julie: 大丈夫よ！あんなに勉強したんだから、楽勝でしょ。
