Cory: Hi, Emma! How was your long weekend?
Emma: Great! It was so nice to have a break.
Cory: I know what you mean. I’ve been snowed under at work lately.
Emma: So did you do anything fun?
Cory: Yeah! I went rafting for the first time. Do you know Andrew? He organized a group trip.
Emma: Oh yeah, I heard about that. I wanted to go, too, but I completely missed the boat and all the spaces for the trip filled up.
Cory: Aw, tough luck! I’m sure we’ll go again in the summer, though. You should join us next time.
Emma: Really? Just let me know. I’d go at the drop of a hat.
Emma: Great! It was so nice to have a break.

キーフレーズ
“be snowed under” 非常に忙しい
たくさんの仕事を抱えているために、処理し切れないような状況を意味する表現です。
例）自分で事業を始めたMayaに友人のLillianがお祝いを言っています。
Lillian: Congratulations! I heard your cake making business has been doing really well.
Maya: Thanks! We’re snowed under at the moment, but I couldn’t be happier.
Lillian: よかったわね！あなたの手作りケーキのお店、すごく順調らしいじゃない。
Maya: ありがとう。今みんなすごく忙しいの。でも私は最高にうれしいわ。
Lillian: Congratulations! I heard your cake making business has been doing really well.

“miss the boat” 好機を逸する
行動を起こすのや決断を下すのが遅すぎたことが原因で好機を逃すことを意味する表現です。
例）MarkとRhodesが大学時代の同級生Katrinaのことを話しています。
Mark: I heard that Katrina’s boyfriend proposed to her. You were really into her in college, weren’t you?
Rhodes: Yeah. I really missed the boat, not asking her out when I had the chance.
Mark: Katrinaが彼氏からプロポーズされたらしいじゃん。お前たしか大学の頃、彼女に夢中だったよな？
Rhodes: うん、チャンスはあったのに付き合ってくれって言わずに、絶好の機会を逃してしまったみたいだな。
Mark: I heard that Katrina’s boyfriend proposed to her. You were really into her in college, weren’t you?

“tough luck” 残念だったね
問題を抱えている人に同情を示すために使われる表現ですが、カジュアルな場面では、いい気味だと感じていることを皮肉をこめて伝える際にも使われます。
例）ついてない一日を過ごしたDanaがルームメートのAngelaと話しています。
Dana: And on top of everything, I forgot my bag on the bus. I called the lost and found, but nothing’s turned up yet.
Angela: That’s tough luck. I hope you can get it back.
Dana: 一番最悪だったのはね、バッグをバスに忘れたことよ。忘れ物取扱所に電話したけど、まだ出てきてないの。
Angela: それは大変だったね。バッグ戻ってくるといいわね。
Dana: And on top of everything, I forgot my bag on the bus. I called the lost and found, but nothing’s turned up yet.
Angela: That’s tough luck. I hope you can get it back.
Dana: 一番最悪だったのはね、バッグをバスに忘れたことよ。忘れ物取扱所に電話したけど、まだ出てきてないの。
Angela: それは大変だったね。バッグ戻ってくるといいわね。
“(do something) at the drop of a hat” ためらうことなく（～する）
ある行為などを直ちに行うこと、まったく躊躇（ちゅうちょ）することなく行うことを意味する表現です。
例）LaurenとNicholasの夫婦にはもうすぐ子供が生まれるようです。
Lauren: Have you packed the bags for the hospital already?
Nicholas: They’re by the door. We can leave at the drop of a hat.
Lauren: 入院の準備ってもうバッグに詰めてあるの？
Nicholas: 玄関の脇。いつでも病院行けるようにしてあるわ。
