Hello people of the Internet! My name is Mess, and I’m from Algeria, which is a beautiful country in northern Africa. I have been living in Japan since October 2019. I moved here after I got a job with GABA as an English instructor, and I’m now based in the Nagoya Learning Studio.

Before we talk about the serious stuff, let me tell you a bit more about myself. I’m 27 years old, and I’ve lived most of my life in Algeria, so coming here was my first time overseas!

In Algeria, our first language is Arabic, but because of the French colonization, a lot of people can speak French as well. As for English, only a few people can speak it – mainly university students and some businesspeople.

Some people are surprised when I tell them I’m from Africa, because they don’t expect people from Africa to have a lighter skin tone. The truth is that Africa is extremely diverse. I belong to the Berber ethnic group native to northern Africa. Both Algeria and northern Africa have seen many cultures and dynasties over the years. The main ones are the Numidians, Romans, Ottomans, and finally, the French Colonial Empire.
