英語で「習慣」は、“habit” といいます。“habit” は「習慣、癖」 などという意味で、個人の日常での決まった行いを指すときに使われます。

ジョンのセリフも以下のように表現できます。

“I want to build good habits this year, especially for study.”
（今年は、特に勉強のための良い習慣を作りたい。）

“habit” は、上記のジョンのセリフのように ”good” や ”bad” を付けて、“good habit”（「良い習慣」）・“bad habit” （「悪い習慣、悪い癖」）などという表現でも使われます。良い習慣を作る、という意味の表現としては、 “build good habits” （「良い習慣を作る」）や、“cultivate good habits” （「良い習慣を養う」）などがあります。

“You need discipline to cultivate good habits.”
（良い習慣を養うには自制心が必要です。）

また「～する習慣がつく、～の癖がつく」という意味の “get into the habit of～” という表現もあります。

“I got into the habit of going for a run in the morning before I start work.”
（朝、仕事を始める前に走りに出かける習慣がついた。）

悪い習慣や癖をやめたり直したりすることを表現したい場合には、“break one’s habit of～” （「～の習慣を断つ、～の癖を直す」）などを用いることができます。

“I want to break my habit of biting my nails.”
（爪を噛む癖を直したい。）

惰性や癖で、あることを無意識に行っている場合には、“out of habit” （「習慣で、癖で」）という表現を用いることができます。

“I shut the gas off every time I leave my house out of habit.”
（毎回家を出るときには、習慣でガスを止めている。）

なお社会や地域などの伝統的な習慣や慣習に対しては、“custom” が用いられます。この表現は国や宗教などにおける大きい規模の習慣・慣習だけでなく、家庭内など小さい規模の習慣・慣習に対しても使うことができます。

“We have a family custom of going for a walk at dawn on the first day of the year.”
（うちには元旦の夜明けに散歩にでかける家族の慣例がある。）
