（1）バラバラにする
“break up” には、「壊す」「（壊して）バラバラにする」「分ける、解体する」といった意味があります。
この用法においては、“break” と “up” を分けて使うことができ、二通りの言い方ができます。
- Break up the chocolate bar into pieces.
- Break the chocolate bar up into pieces.
- チョコレートバーを細かく砕いてね。
- Let’s break up the wood and throw it on the fire.
- 薪を割って、火にくべよう。
- Would you mind breaking that head of lettuce up and putting it in the bowl?
- そのレタスを一玉ばらばらに千切って、ボウルに入れてくれる？
- The government broke up the monopoly.
- 政府はその独占権を分割した。
- English words can be broken up into syllables.
- 英単語は音節に分けることができる。

“break up” は「粉々になる」「バラバラに壊れる」などといった意味も表します。
- The plate broke up into pieces when it hit the ground.
- その皿は、地面に落ちて粉々に砕けた。
- The ship broke up against the rocks.
- 船が岩に当たって粉砕した。
- The airplane broke up in mid-air.
- その飛行機は上空で空中分解した。
（2）止めさせる
“break up” には、活動や行いを「止めさせる」「終わり・中止にさせる」といった意味もあります。
この用法においても、“break” と “up” を分けて使うことができます。
- The teacher broke up the fight.
- The teacher broke the fight up.
- 先生が喧嘩を止めさせた。
- The event was so noisy that the police came and broke it up.
- そのイベントは騒音がひどかったので、警察が来てイベントを中止にさせた。
- I hate to break up the party, but my parents just called and said they are coming home early, so everyone has to leave now!
- パーティーをお開きにするのは嫌なんだけどさ、うちの親から今電話があって、予定より早く帰ってくるって言うから、みんなもう帰って！
- It took three referees to break up the massive brawl between the rival hockey teams.
- ライバル同士のホッケーチーム間で起きた盛大な乱闘を止めるには、審判員3人がかりだった。

“break up” には、活動や行いが「終わる」という意味もあります。
- The meeting broke up around 3pm.
- 会議は3時頃に終わった。
- It looks like the party’s starting to break up; let’s go home.
- パーティーはもうそろそろ終わりみたい。家に帰ろう。
（3）別れる
“break up” は、恋愛関係にあったカップルが「別れる」という意味も表します。
- They broke up last week.
- 彼らは先週別れた。
- I can’t believe they broke up!
- 彼らが別れたなんて信じられない！
- They’ve been arguing a lot recently. Do you think they’ll break up?
- 彼らは最近喧嘩ばかりだね。別れると思う？
また、“breaks up with～”「～（人）と別れる」という表現を使う場合、主語の人物のほうから ”with” の直後に来る「人」と別れることを決意したという意味合いになります。
［Jordanと Morganは付き合って半年のカップル］
- Morgan:
- We’ve been having a lot of problems recently… I don’t know how to say this, but…
- Jordan:
- Oh, just tell me. It can’t be that bad! It’s not like you want to break up with me… right?
- Morgan:
- Well…
- Jordan:
- You’re breaking up with me?!
- Morgan:
- このところ、私たちの関係って問題ばかりだよね…これ、何て言ったらいいか分からないんだけど、でも…
- Jordan:
- 何、言ってくれよ。別にそんな深刻なことにはならないって！何も俺と別れたいっていう訳じゃないだろ…だよな？
- Morgan:
- うーん、まぁ…
- Jordan:
- 俺と別れたいってこと？！
（4）聞き取りにくくなる
“break up” には、機器や家電製品などが、技術的または電波の受信の問題などが原因で「聞き取りにくくなる」という意味でも使われます。
- The radio broke up when we drove into the tunnel.
- 車がトンネルに入った時、カーラジオが聞こえづらくなった。
- You’re breaking up. Cell phone reception is probably bad here. Can you try calling me back later?
- （電話で）君の声が途切れるんだけど。ここ、電波が悪いみたい。あとでまたかけ直してもらえる？
- The connection’s starting to break up… it’s probably because of the storm.
- ちょっと電話が遠くなってきてるみたい…たぶん嵐のせいかな。
