＜映画館に来ているBenjaminと友人のDeniseがどの映画を観ようかと相談しています。＞

Benjamin: So, did you have anything in mind?
Denise: Not really. I’m happy to go with the flow.
Benjamin: Good to hear.
Denise: I’m just throwing this out there, but how about that new zombie thriller?
Benjamin: The Walkers? I heard it was dull as dishwater.
Denise: Really? I read in the paper it was pretty good for an indie film.
Benjamin: The reviews I saw said the zombies weren’t very realistic. Apparently it was shot on a shoestring budget.
Denise: Oh, that’s no good. What about How I Met You?
Benjamin: The romantic comedy? Sounds good!
Denise: OK, let’s go with that.

Benjamin: 何か観たいのある？
Denise: 特に。任せるわ。
Benjamin: いいねぇ。
Denise: ただの思いつきだけど、あの新しいゾンビものはどうかしら？
Benjamin: The Walkersのこと？すごくつまんないって聞いたけど。
Denise: そうなの？自主制作の割に結構いいって新聞で読んだけど。
Benjamin: 俺が見たレビューにはゾンビがあんまりリアルじゃないって書いてあったけど。すごく低予算で作ったみたいだし。
Denise: へえ、それはだめね。How I Met You?ってのはどう？
Benjamin: ラブコメ？いいんじゃない！
Denise: いいわね、じゃあそれにしましょう。

キーフレーズ

“go with the flow”　流れに身を任せる

これは他の人がしていることと同じことをしたり、他の人がしたいと望んでいることを容易に受け入れることを言う際によく使われる表現です。通常はそれが自分にとって最も楽であると思っていることを表します。

例）Nicoと姉のMaggieがネットで出前の注文をしようとしています。
Nico: So, we’ve got Italian, Chinese, Mexican, Indian, and Ethiopian. Any preferences?
Maggie: Whatever you want. I’m happy to go with the flow.
Nico: イタリアンに中華、メキシカン、インド料理にエチオピア料理。何か食べたいものある？
Maggie: 何でも好きなもの頼んで。あなたが食べたいもの私も喜んで食べるわ。

“(throw/put) (something) out there”　試しに言ってみる

これは意見や案などを試しに言ってみるような場面でよく使われる表現です。意見などの前置きとして使っても、後に付け加えるように言い添えても構いません。

例）Justineと友人のTysonが最近できたレストランの予約をしようとしていますが、電話がなかなかつながりません。
Justine: Just throwing this out there, but maybe we should see what their website says about reservations.
Tyson: That’s not a bad idea, actually. Would you mind checking?
Justine: ちょっと思いついたんだけど、予約のこと何か書いてないか、ウェブで見てみたらいいんじゃない？
Tyson: それ悪くないかもね、意外と。見てもらってもいいかな？

“dull as (dishwater/ditchwater)”　実につまらない

これは非常につまらないことや面白くないことを強調的に言う際に使われる表現です。元々は「どぶの水」を意味する“ditchwater”を使った表現でしたが、現在は「食器を洗った水」を表す“dishwater”のほうがよく使われています。

例）MuhammadとガールフレンドのGinaが一緒に行ったコンサートの話をしています。
Muhammad: Well, that was dull as dishwater. They really didn’t have any energy on stage.
Gina: Yeah, I wonder what was wrong. They were great the last time we saw them.
Muhammad: いやあ、すごく退屈だったな。ステージ上にまったく元気が感じられなかったし。
Gina: そうね。どうしちゃったのかしら。前回観に行ったときはすごくよかったのに。

“(on a) shoestring (budget)”　非常に低予算で

これは金額が非常に少ないことを言う際に使われるフレーズで、特に「予算」に対して使われる表現です。なお、“shoestring”が単独で「少ない予算」を意味する場合もあります。

例）Eveと兄のRodgerが地元の市場で買い物を終えたところです。
Eve: I love this place. Look at all the fresh fruit and vegetables we were able to get.
Rodger: Yeah, this is the best place to go for someone on a shoestring budget.
Eve: ここってすごく好きだわ。見てよ、新鮮な野菜やくだものこんなに買えたわ。
Rodger: そうだな。ここは低予算で食材を揃えたい人にとっては最高の場所だな。
