Sam: Hey, did you watch The Kingdom last night?
Martin: Of, course, I never miss it!
Sam: Wasn’t last night’s episode a real nail-biter?
Martin: Oh, definitely. I thought the main character wasn’t going to make it out alive.
Sam: Right? It was super suspenseful. And I just about died when they revealed that the two rivals are actually long-lost brothers.
Martin: Too bad we still don’t know who their father is.
Sam: I wonder who it could be!
Martin: I thought they would reveal it, but then the episode ended on a cliffhanger.
Sam: I know! I really hope they tie up all the loose ends in the season finale next week.

キーフレーズ
“nail-biter” はらはらどきどきさせる
映画やドラマなどが、緊張感から思わず爪をかんでしまうぐらいサスペンスに満ちていていることを意味する表現です。
例）JakeとChambersは昨晩のバスケットボールの試合について話しています。
Jake: That game last night was a real nail-biter!
Chambers: Yeah, I almost thought we wouldn’t win!
Jake: 昨日の試合はすごい展開だったな。
Chambers: ああ、勝てないかと思ったよ。

“just about died” 死ぬほど～だった
ショック、困惑、楽しい気持ちなど、非常に強い感情を抱いていることを意味する表現です。
例）SarahとMollyが高校時代の思い出について話しています。
Sarah: Didn’t you use to be in love with the star quarterback of the football team?
Molly: Oh yeah, I just about died of embarrassment when he found out from someone that I liked him.
Sarah: あなた、クォーターバックの人のこと好きだったよね？
Molly: そうよ。あの人が誰かから聞いて私の気持ちを知られたときには、死ぬほど恥ずかしかったわ。

例）映画を見終えたNicholeとAlexが話しています。
Nichole: I can’t believe the movie ended on a cliffhanger! I need to know what happens.
Alex: It’s a good thing the sequel is scheduled to come out next year.
Nichole: 次回作に続くっていう終わり方、信じられない！結末がどうなるか知りたいわ。
Alex: まあ、続編が来年公開されることになっててよかったよね。

Johnny: Yeah, I just need to tie up a few loose ends here at work and then I’ll head on over.
Katherine: 今日、予定通り夕飯食べにくるのよね？
Johnny: うん、いくつかやりかけの仕事終わらせたら、そっちに向かうよ。
