＜数日後に卒業式を控えたHollyと親友のKateがこれまでの日々を振り返っています。＞

Holly:Graduation is just around the corner. I can’t believe it’s been four years.
Kate:Yeah, the time really flew by. Remember when we first met?
Holly:You mean at the career fair? I convinced you that I was a recruiter for a design firm! You looked so nervous.
Kate:I was nervous! You went so far as to take one of my homemade business cards and say that you wanted to set up an interview…
Holly:I was pretty convincing, wasn’t I? I still can’t believe you fell for that.
Kate:[laughs] Hook, line, and sinker.
Holly:Actually, Kate, I wanted to give you something.
Kate:Oh really? What is it?
Holly:[hands Kate a book] It’s a book of our memories together. I’d been saving things: movie tickets, photos, etcetera. [flips to a page] Does this ring any bells?
Kate:Holly! Is this my business card from the career fair?
Holly:Yeah, it took some digging but I found it with some of my old documents. Crazy, right?
Kate:Holly, this is amazing. Thank you so much.
Kate:Yeah, the time really flew by. Remember when we first met?

Holly:就職説明会のときのこと？私がデザイン会社の採用担当のふりしたわよね。あなたすごく緊張してたわね。
Kate:緊張したわよ！私の手作りの名刺を受け取って、面接したいなんてことまで言って…
Holly:すごくうまかったでしょ、私？今でも信じられない、あれに引っかかるなんて。
Kate:[笑いながら] 完全に引っかかったわ。
Holly:実はねKate、あなたにあげたいものがあったのよ。
Kate:えっ、そうなの？何？
Holly:[Kateに本のようなものを渡して]私たちの思い出ノートよ。いろいろ取っておいたの、映画のチケットとか、写真とか。 [ページをめくって] これって、何か思い出さない？
Kate:まあ、何てことなの！これって就職説明会のときの私の名刺じゃない？
Holly:そうよ、結構探して、古い書類の中に見つけたのよ。すごくない？
Kate:すごい、驚きだわ。本当にありがとう。
Kate:そうね、あっという間ね。私たちが初めて会ったときのこと覚えてる？

キーフレーズ
“time flies by” 時があっという間に過ぎる
“time flies by” は友人同士などのくだけた会話でよく使われる表現で、特に一緒に楽しい時間を過ごした後などに使われます。充実した時間が普段よりも短く感じられることを言い表すフレーズで、似た表現で“Time flies when you are having fun.”（楽しいときは時間が早く過ぎる）という言い方もします。なお時制が現在形の場合は”by”が省かれることが多いです。
例）HeidiとRussellが電話で前日のパーティーの話をしています。
Heidi:I’m so exhausted today. I can’t believe we didn’t leave the party until 2 am.
Russell:Yeah, after a couple of drinks the time really flew by.
Heidi:今日はすごく疲れてる。2時までいたなんて信じられないわ。
Russell:ああ、2、3杯飲んでから、時間があっという間に過ぎたね。
Heidi:I’m so exhausted today. I can’t believe we didn’t leave the party until 2 am.
Russell:Yeah, after a couple of drinks the time really flew by.
Heidi:今日はすごく疲れてる。2時までいたなんて信じられないわ。
Russell:ああ、2、3杯飲んでから、時間があっという間に過ぎたね。
“go so far as to (do something)” ～しさえする
“go so far as to”は行為や発言などが度を越していて、周りの人を驚かせたり、あきれさせている様子を言い表す際に使われるフレーズです。
例）Edwardが週末に行われたバドミントンの試合で起こったことをRebeccaに話しています。
Edward:It was pretty crazy. He went so far as to leave in the middle of a match!
Rebecca:Wow, I didn’t realize club badminton could be so exciting!
Edward:かなり普通じゃなかったね。何しろ彼は試合の途中で帰っちゃったんだからね！
Rebecca:すごいわね、バドミントンクラブの試合がそんなに盛り上がるとは知らなかったわ！
Edward:It was pretty crazy. He went so far as to leave in the middle of a match!

“fall for (something)” ～にだまされる
“fall for (something)”はうまい話や策略などにまんまとだまされてしまうことを意味するカジュアルな表現です。友人のいたずらなどに引っかかることにも、詐欺などの犯罪の被害に遭う場合にも使うことができる表現です。
例）Quentinが最近詐欺の被害に遭った友人のWendyと話しています。
Quentin:What do you mean you spent all of your savings on a scam?
Wendy:He told me that I could easily double my savings and I fell for it.
Quentin:貯金を全額詐欺で巻き上げられたって、どういうこと？
Wendy:貯金を簡単に倍にできるって、あの人に言われて、まんまとだまされちゃったのよ。
Quentin:What do you mean you spent all of your savings on a scam?
Wendy:He told me that I could easily double my savings and I fell for it.
Quentin:貯金を全額詐欺で巻き上げられたって、どういうこと？
Wendy:貯金を簡単に倍にできるって、あの人に言われて、まんまとだまされちゃったのよ。
“hook, line, and sinker” まんまとだまされて
これは人がすっかりだまされてしまった状況を強調的に言うために使われるフレーズで、魚が釣り針だけではなく、釣り糸やおもりも飲み込んでしまい、完全に釣られた様子に由来する表現です。
例）Allisonと夫のIanが旅行中に経験したことを話しています。
Allison:Remember, there was the couple who tricked us into thinking they were brother and sister!
Ian:They made up such a good story that we believed it hook, line, and sinker.
Allison:覚えてるわよね、私たちのことだまして、兄妹のふりしてたカップルがいたこと！
Ian:あいつらうまく話をでっち上げてたから、完全に信じちゃったよな、俺たち。
Allison:Remember, there was the couple who tricked us into thinking they were brother and sister!
Ian:They made up such a good story that we believed it hook, line, and sinker.
Allison:覚えてるわよね、私たちのことだまして、兄妹のふりしてたカップルがいたこと！
Ian:あいつらうまく話をでっち上げてたから、完全に信じちゃったよな、俺たち。
