決して負けない得意なゲーム

＜Suzieは友人のAaronとトランプをしています。＞

Suzie:Ugh, I can’t believe you won again!
Aaron:Not to toot my own horn or anything, but I told you I was good at this game.
Suzie:Oh, don’t be so full of yourself, Aaron.
Aaron:Fine, fine. Want to play another round?
Suzie:Sure. I promise I’ll beat you this time!
Aaron:Don’t promise what you can’t keep…
Suzie:Just shut up and play.
[a while later]

Aaron:See, I told you. I’m unbeatable!
Suzie:I don’t want to play anymore…
Aaron:You’re just mad because you can’t figure out a good strategy.
Suzie:This game has nothing to do with strategy or skill. It’s just the luck of the draw!
Aaron:Skill or luck – it doesn’t matter. Either way, I’ve clearly got the lion’s share of it!

Suzie:えーっ、信じられない、またあなたの勝ちなんて！
Aaron:自慢じゃないけど、僕は得意だって言ったよね、このゲーム。
Suzie:あら、あんまり調子に乗らないで、Aaron。
Aaron:わかった、わかった。もう1回やりたい？
Suzie:やるわ。今度こそ必ず勝つわ！
Aaron:「必ず」とか言っちゃだめだよ、できもしないのに…
Suzie:いいから黙ってやるのよ。
[しばらく経って]

Aaron:ほら、言っただろ。僕は無敵なんだから！
Suzie:もうやりたくないわ…
Aaron:勝つための作戦がわからないからって怒るなよ。
Suzie:このゲームは作戦とか腕前とかぜんぜん関係ないわ。ただの運任せよ！
Aaron:腕前でも運でもどっちでもいいさ。いずれにせよ、僕がこのゲームでおいしい思いをしてるのは明らかだからね！

キーフレーズ

“(toot/blow) (one’s) own horn”　自画自賛する

自分の能力や才能、業績などについてひけらかすような調子で話すことを意味するフレーズです。

例）Joeyが母親から聞いた話を姉のMiriamに伝えようとしています。
Joey:So, it sounds like Aunt Lillian is actually coming over from Africa for our family gathering this year.
Miriam:Ugh, I can’t stand her. She’s always tooting her own horn!
Joey:それでね、Lillian伯母さんが今年は親戚の集まりに来ちゃうみたいなんだよ、はるばるアフリカから。
Miriam:嫌だわ、あの伯母さん我慢できないわ。いつも自慢話ばっかりなんだもん！

“(be) full of (oneself)”　自惚れている

自信過剰で非常に傲慢な態度の人物に対して使われるフレーズです。

例）AndreaとボーイフレンドのColinが他愛もないおしゃべりをしています。
Andrea:I’ve never met a guy who is as full of himself as you.
Colin:Yes, but have you ever met anyone who’s so attractive?
Andrea:あなたみたいに自信過剰な人会ったことないわ。
Colin:だろうね。あと、こんなに魅力的な男にも会ったことないんじゃない？

“(be) the luck of the draw” 運頼みである

成否や勝敗などが偶然の結果であり、人の力が及ばないものであることを意味するフレーズです。ここで使われている“draw”は「（くじなどを）引くこと」、「抽選」という意味です。

例）友人のBrentを乗せて車を運転しているKyleは警官から車を止めるよう指示されました。
Kyle:What? Why are they pulling me over? I wasn’t speeding or anything!
Brent:Calm down! Sometimes they just do random checks on people. Just the luck of the draw.
Kyle:何だよ？何で止めるんだよ？スピード違反とかしてないのに！
Brent: 落ち着けって！あいつら適当に選んで止まらせて、チェックしてるだけだよ。ただ運が悪かっただけだよ。

“the lion’s share (of something)”　大部分／おいしいところ

分け前や分配などにおいて最も多くの部分や一番いい部分を意味するフレーズです。

例）JoanとOscarは会社の今後の予算について話し合う会議に出席しています。
Joan:It seems like the lion’s share of our profits will have to go towards upgrading the machinery.
Oscar:That seems like a good investment. We’ll be able to keep increasing profits this way.
Joan:利益のほとんどは機器への設備投資に回すことになりそうね。
Oscar:それはいい先行投資になりそうじゃないか。そうすることで継続的に利益を増やしていけることになるだろうし。
